File Naming Convention

This document will provide the nomenclature and naming convention structure used for the MASTER data products.  The MASTER personnel conducting the airborne missions and managing the instrument are located at NASA Ames research center and will inform JPL that level 1B radiance data is available.  They will provide a downloadable zip file containing the level 1B radiance HDF files and a set of mission and summary files along with the Signal Response Function (SRF).   JPL will extract the mission information and update the JPL MASTER database with the new airborne flight lines and make those available on the JPL MASTER web site. The data products for level 1B, 2 and 3 are called out below:

  • Level 1B Radiance (including VSWIR and TIR) (l1b)
  • Level 2 Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (l2)
  • Level 3 Surface Mineralogy Analysis (l3sma)
  • Level 3 EvapoTranspiration (l3et)
  • Level 3 Elevated Thermal Features (l3etf)
  • Level 3 Fire Radiative Power (l3frp)

Nomenclature/Naming Convention

The product level name follows the format that was established by NASA Ames:

MASTERL1B_1165300_08_20110610_1623_1627_V01

Note: All the values are capitalized to the version V01.

<Product level name MASTERLn(y)>_<Mission number ID>_<scene number (2 digits)>_<date YYYYMMDD>_<start time HHMM>_<end time HHMM>_<Version number VNN>

Level 1B

The level 1B “radiance at sensor”  is the original MASTER name used by NASA Ames and will not change since their naming is consistent over many years:

MASTERL1B_1165300_08_20110610_1623_1627_V01

Note: All the values are capitalized to the version V01.

The only product available from Ames is the “HDF” file which is the “Radiance at sensor”.   From the HDF file additional products are produced by JPL which include the Visible ShortWave InfraRed (VSWIR) product and the Thermal InfraRed (TIR) product.    The naming convention for these products follow the Ames naming convention.   These products will be PNG and KMZ files associated with VSWIR and TIR at given bands.

MASTERL1B_1165300_01_20110610_1508_1520_V01-TIR-47-44-43.png

This follows the naming convention above but adds the VSWIR name and the bands used similarly the TIR name and bands are added.

<Product level name MASTERLn(y)>_<Mission number ID>_<scene number (2 digits)>_<date YYYYMMDD>_<start time HHMM>_<end time HHMM>_<Version number VNN>-<specific sub product>-<bands used>.

Level 2

The level 2 follows the same naming convention with the addition of the Build ID and Software Version ID.
