December 1998 Validation Experiment
On December 12th 1998 the second MASTER validation was conducted at Lake Meade, NV and Ivanpah Playa, CA by teams from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the University of Arizona (UofA) respectively. The experiment involved overflights of the MASTER instrument at each of the 2 sites at 3 elevations of 2000m (6560 ft), 4000m (13120 ft) and 6000m (19680 ft). The MASTER instrument was flown on the Department of Energy (DOE) KingAir Beachcraft Aircraft with custom air-fence. The radiance at the sensor was predicted by propagating ground measurements through the atmosphere and the predicted radiance compared to the MASTER measured radiance. The results for each of the MASTER channels at the 3 flight altitudes are summarized below.

* No results were obtained for the mid infrared channels (Port 3) due to noise problems with the MASTER data. A linear variable filter is being added to Port 3 which should reduce this problem.
